Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has made it clear that “under no circumstances” will he concede and join former President Donald Trump as the latter’s vice president.
The founder and general counsel of health freedom group Children’s Health Defense (CHD) quashed rumors of him joining Trump’s ticket in a May 11 tweet. “Just to quell any speculation, under no circumstances will I join Trump on an electoral ticket. Our positions on certain fundamental issues, our approaches to governance and our philosophies of leadership could not be further apart,” he wrote.
The tweet from the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy came as a response to former White House chief strategist and podcast host Steve Bannon. Back in April, the “Bannon’s War Room” host said the younger Kennedy would be a good running mate for Trump in case former Arizona gubernatorial candidate and news anchor Kari Lake was unavailable.
“If [Lake is] not available to be Trump’s vice president, [RFK Jr.] would be an excellent choice for Trump to consider,” Bannon said. The erstwhile adviser to the Trump campaign said his suggestion purportedly received a standing ovation during a public appearance.
Despite both candidates being on the other side of the fence – Trump under the Republican Party and RFK Jr. under the Democratic Party – both have several things in common.
Both Trump and RFK Jr. are hostile to the Deep State. They also espouse anti-establishment positions such as ending wars driven by the military-industrial complex and promoting free speech. Because of this, the mainstream media also holds a deep hatred of both the real estate mogul and the health freedom advocate.
Some leftist commentators, however, decried both Bannon’s suggestion and the prospect of RFK Jr. becoming the chief executive.
“[RFK Jr.’s] ‘anti-vax’ beliefs have long been associated with far-right figures,” remarked LI News Radio host Jay Oliver. He also cited the CHD founder’s appearances on Fox News to spew so-called “conspiracy theories.”
Patricia Crouse, a political science practitioner at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, said Bannon “is just trying to stir the pot” with his remarks. She added that RFK Jr. “has zero chance of winning the nomination” and that “the Kennedy legacy will not help him.”
“Some Democrats may appreciate his environmental views, but the majority of his other political positions are too extreme for Democrats or even independents,” Crouse said. “Although he has the Kennedy name, I don’t think this will help him – especially considering many in his family have openly opposed his views, specifically his anti-vaccination views.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has no plans to organize any primary debates despite the presence of candidates such as RFK Jr. and former California congressional candidate Marianne Williamson.
Because of this, RFK Jr. criticized the lack of primary debates. During an April 2023 appearance on “Breitbart News Sunday,” he remarked that this refusal to organize primary debates only serves as “confirmation” that the “system is rigged.”
“The DNC, at this point, has taken the official position that there will be no debate,” he said. “I think that’s unfortunate.” (Related: Dems running cover for Biden’s cognitive decline as Pelosi claims “There shouldn’t be any” Trump-Biden debates.)
“There are too many Americans who already think that the whole system is rigged against them. This is confirmation of that, and I think that’s troubling. When you have so many Americans who are concerned about election integrity, we should be doing everything we can … to show that this is not rigged.”
